‘Agent Carter’ Rumored for Netflix Original Series

Disney and Netflix have just worked out a deal that gives the streaming site exclusive access to their catalog starting in September. That means if you subscribe to an online streaming service, you won’t be seeing The Lion King, any of the Star Wars films, or the likes of the Avengers anywhere else. This also means that some Disney owned properties, like the canceled Agent Carter, are hitting the rumor mill with a second chance at life.

Agent Carter, which aired two seasons on ABC, was canceled right before the network’s upfront presentation this year, prompting plenty of fan outcry. There’s already a petition in place from fans who want to see Netflix pick up the Hayley Atwell fronted series for more episodes, and if the rumored deal goes down, fans could get that, but maybe not quite how they wanted.

According to ExStreamist, a site that covers news for all streaming platforms, Agent Carter could be picked up by Netflix as an original series to go along with its other Marvel shows. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the show would pick up where the ABC series left off. And that doesn’t even mean the same cast would be back.

When rumors of a possible Netflix revival of the series surfaced, the site reached out to their own Netflix sources to get the scoop, and they didn’t get much, only that, “there are definitely some phone calls being made” and “Netflix and Marvel are exploring all expansions of their current partnerships.” Expanding the current series is more likely in reference to the spinoffs the streaming site is looking at in regards to the current offerings of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. They’ve already ordered The Punisher spinoff, but are looking to expand. The site did, however, get a few more details.

ExStreamist notes that Agent Carter could be covered under the new Netflix and Disney deal since ABC and Marvel are both Disney companies, but the changeover would make things a little more complicated than if Netflix had picked up an ABC series still in development. Jessica Jones did start as an ABC series after all. It’s unclear just why Netflix wouldn’t be able to continue the series in the same way that Hulu did for The Mindy Project or Yahoo did for Community from a deal-making standpoint, but it might all come down to scheduling.

Because Hayley Atwell is signed on to ABC’s Conviction, a drama series that will premiere in the 2016-2017 season, and word is ABC loves it, it’s unlikely they’d work around an Agent Carter schedule with another network. When the option was there for Atwell to do both shows for ABC, there was talk that the network would enable her to film both. But if Agent Carter becomes a Netflix property without the ABC studio behind it, that deal wouldn’t be in place.

So far, there’s been no official word from any of the studios or networks involved on if they’re even making a deal, even if the rumor mill has been in overdrive. We’ll let you know if we hear more.

ABC’s Conviction: Monday Nights at 10 Will Still Begin With “C”

With Castle now officially canceled, the Monday night slot at 10pm is now free.  Maybe it’s because the heart of Castlereally ended in season seven, but I found myself curious about the show that would be replacing it. It turns out that show is Conviction – which stars Hayley Atwell from the sadly canceled  Agent Carter.   Here’s the story synopsis.

Lawyer and former First Daughter Hayes Morrison (Hayley Atwell, “Marvel’s Agent Carter”) is about to accept a job offered from her sexy nemesis, NY District Attorney Wayne Wallis, to avoid jail time for cocaine possession and avoid hurting her mother’s Senate campaign. Working with his team at the new Conviction Integrity Unit will let her use her brilliant mind to turn over cases where there is credible suspicion of wrongful conviction, and give her a chance to turn things around with her high-powered political family.

Having seen a bit more than just the trailer, I can tell you that the show has a very ensemble and that all of the characters definitely have something going on besides just working on this team! The show has a well-seasoned cast one that the synopsis has listed as starring, “in addition to Atwell.

Eddie Cahill (CSI: NY) as Wayne Wallis
Shawn Ashmore (The Folllowing) as Sam Sullivan,
Merrin Dungey (Alias/Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Maxine
Emily Kinney (The Walking Dead) as Tess Thompson
Manny Montana (Graceland) as Franklin “Frankie” Rios
Daniel DiTomasso (Witches of East End) Jackson Morrison.

The show has an equally impressive level of behind the scenes experience. It’s co-created by writer Liz Friedman from Elementary & Marvel’s Jessica Jones, and director Liz Friedlander from The Following & Stalker. The executive producer is Mark Gordon who’s done Criminal Minds, Grey’s Anatomy, & Saving Private Ryan.

Some of those shows do make me nervous about the direction that Conviction will be taking. I’m not a fan of Criminal Minds and the truly senseless violence level on The Following and Stalker was awful. However, there’s nothing like that in the bits of the pilot that I’ve seen. Some of it reminds me of Cold Case and The Closer, while the darker more intriguing elements are more about the politics than the cases – kind of like, The Good Wife.

Just from what’s in the trailer, I think the mother-daughter dynamic is going to be interesting. The cases also look solid. The way that they have to go over past evidence, is what reminds me of Cold Case. As for romance….I’m not sure what to think. All the men on this show are attractive, but it remains to be seen who they are as characters to see if anything sparks.

Conviction is a show I’ll be giving a shot come the fall. Hayes Morrison is no Peggy Carter or Kate Beckett – but perhaps she’s just a tad of Jessica Jones? However, for those Agent Carter fans out there, here’s a small consultation: you will get to see Hayley Atwell rocking some outfits in shades of red!

Agent Carter Fans Petition Netflix to Save the Show

Marvel fans are calling on Netflix to save the ABC series Agent Carter, which was canceled this past week.

All five major networks made big headlines this past week as they brought the axe down on some beloved TV shows. But perhaps Marvel fans have been most outspoken following the news that ABC has canceled Marvel’s Agent Carter after just two seasons. Now, those fans are attempting to fight back. They have officially launched a petition asking Netflix to save the show.

Netflix sounds like the perfect home for the series, which stars Hayley Atwell as one of the founding members of S.H.I.E.L.D. They already host the very popular Marvel series Daredevil, which recently premiered its second season, and Jessica Jones, which has been renewed for season 2. Coming to the streaming giant later this year is Luke Cage. And they have Iron Fist planned for 2017. Also arriving next year is The Defenders, a miniseries that brings all four of these superheroes together under one roof. The Punisher is also getting his own series. So why not add one more to the line-up?

As of this morning, over 21,000 people have signed the petition, sending out the distress call that they want their Peggy Carter saved. The petition targets Disney, ABC and Netflix. And it is very direct and to the point. Their message?

“Save Agent Carter, bring her to NETFLIX.”

That’s it. Now, various supporters around the Internet are making their case on an individual basis as to why the show must be saved. In the realm of superhero TV shows, hers is one of the few, alongside The CW’s Supergirl that has a female lead. One supporter of the petition had this to say about why it’s important to keep Agent Carter up and running, even if it isn’t on network TV.

“Peggy Carter is such an amzing [sic] character, and with lines such as ‘I know my own worth,’ she’s also an exemplary role-model. By cutting ‘Agent Carter,’ ABC is only adding to the stigma that women cannot act a lead role and be powerful by themselves that is often preached by media standards.”

Many of the people signing the petition claim it’s because Agent Carter is one of the few TV series that show women in a positive light. It wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for Netflix to step in and take over the show since they already have an established working relationship with Marvel. And they are known for saving shows, such as Arrested Development or reviving them, such as Gilmore Girls and Fuller House. All of which have proven to be big hits on the streaming giant.

Agent Carter closed out its second season with considerably low ratings. That might not detract Netflix from picking up the show if fans show enough interest. They ran the final season of The Killing after AMC killed it off due to low ratings. Though, fans might be out of luck. As ABC canceled Agent Carter, they did pick up the legal drama Conviction which stars Hayley Atwell. If you want to sign the petition and help save Agent Carter, you can do so at change.org.

Agent Carter Season 3 Cancelled, Another Marvel Series On Its Way

Hayley Atwell is astoundingly famous on the Internet for her portrayal of Peggy Carter. From Twitter to Facebook, everyone is clamoring for an Agent Carter season 3 announcement.

Unfortunately, no matter how strong the internet loves a celebrity, online raves just aren’t enough to save certain shows. It happened with Firefly and it might happen to Agent Carter, because the sad reality is that if widescale viewership is low, networks are bound to pull the plug on a program.

Agent Carter season 3 was almost always shaky, starting when Atwell announced that she will star in a lead role in another ABC program, the legal drama Conviction. And while both Atwell and the network have expressed their desire to keep both her commitments as Agent Peggy Carter and her new show, it’s not looking like a priority considering Agent Carter’s low numbers. Moreover, many fans saw her commitment with Conviction as a sign that she’s ready to start moving on from her life as Peggy.

With regards to the ratings, Fansided reported that the season 2 finale attracted only 2.35 million viewers. This is only roughly a third of the number who came and watched the series premiere last January 2015. But another reason for the dire fate of season 3 is that Marvel’s coming up with another program which could take the spotlight from Agent Carter: “Marvel’s Most Wanted.”
